DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ASSURES SCRUTINIZING LANDLORD, TENANT LAW

The Delta State House of Assembly Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl Child Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Support Services, and the Committee on Urban Renewal has assured Deltans that the State Legislature will do a thorough job in scrutinizing the new Landlord and Tenant law which is before the house.

Chairman of the Committee Hon. Bridget Anyafulu gave the assurance at the public hearing which held at the Press center of the Assembly Complex, Asaba.

Welcoming stakeholders to the public hearing, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu said the proposed bill seeks to regulate the State’s housing sector by defining the roles, obligations, and activities of key actors such as Landlords, Tenants and agents.

Hon. Anyafulu who presided over the exercise alongside other lawmakers explained that the bill also seeks to repeal the rent control and recovery law of 1977 and establish a new law to fit into modern reality.

She assured participants that all inputs from the stakeholders will further examined adding that their contributions were vital in the law making process.

Stakeholders from the Customary Court of Appeal, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Urban and regional planning, Association of Tenants and Agents, Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors, and other relevant bodies made their presentation, calling of a review some clauses of the proposed bill.

Present at the public hearing were the House Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, Honourables Oloye Pereotu, Ferguson Onwo, Austine Uroye, Mathew Omonade, and Bernard Odior.

Also present at the exercise was the representative of the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, representative of the Ministry of Justice, a cross section of stakeholders from within and outside the state capital.
